NORTH PITTSBURGH CORVETTE CLUB

MINUTES

MEETING HELD JANUARY 9TH, 2008

  • Rick Conwell in Judi O’Rourke’s absence called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. at Marzoni’s Restaurant on Rt. 8 with 48 members present.
  • Rick Conwell told the members that the November 13th minutes and all other pertinent papers were available on the table.  Rick asked if there were any questions/comments/corrections to the minutes from the November 13th meeting.  There were none.  Marty Smrek motioned to accept the minutes and Ron Knorr seconded.  The minutes stand.
  • Bob Martin gave the Treasurer’s Report.  There is a balance left over from the 50/50 monies collected last year that were used to defray the costs of the Christmas party.  This balance will start the new 50/50 kitty and go towards the costs of this year’s party.  Ed Armstrong motioned to accept the treasurer’s report and George Hysong seconded.
  • There were no new members present but Dick O’Rourke who has been absent from the meetings for so long reintroduced himself.

OLD BUSINESS:

  • Rick Conwell thanked everyone who brought cereal and oatmeal.  Members should bring peanut butter and jelly to the February 12th meeting.
  • Rick Conwell reminded everyone to pay their 2008 dues if they have not yet done so.
  • Rick Conwell discussed that the members have had four months to review the bylaws presented by the Bylaw Committee (Ramona Baker, Dan Lucovich, and Denise Bilka) and any changes brought forth by the members.  Bill Miller made a motion to accept the bylaws and Ceil Conwell seconded.  All members present voted and were in favor.  Bylaws stand as written and copies will be available at each meeting.
  • Susan Ayres discussed the May 15-18th trip to Asheville, North Carolina and the Charlotte Motor Speedway.  There are still rooms available if any member is still interested.  As far as the Nascar race tickets, only 18 tickets have been purchased so far.  If interested in the Nascar race tickets, members have until the end of January to purchase them.  Susan has reserved a nice dinner for Thursday evening.  Friday evening activities in Asheville are on your own to do some shopping, see the arts, or catch some entertainment.  Call Susan Ayres at (412) 822-7298 if you have any questions.
  • Rick Conwell reopened the discussion regarding the Club purchasing flags.  A motion was made at November’s meeting to purchase these flags but it was unclear whether the Club should pay for these flags out of the treasury before enough members showed interest.  These flags are 2-ply, made with a special process, and will carry the Club logo.  The flags will cost approximately $6/each if the Club orders 100.  Larry Lang will purchase the poles himself and sell them at a cost of $10/ea.  The poles are specific to the year Corvette you own.  Susan Ayres suggested that Scott Berkey (who supplies the Club apparel) be contacted to see if he can get a better price on the flags.  Larry agreed to contact Scott.  After much discussion, it was agreed that Denise Bilka will put together an email asking members to sign up if interested.  Also, members present at the January and/or February meetings should sign up if interested.  Once the Club gets an order for 50, the flags will be purchased.
  • Rick Conwell discussed the Club is still in need of a Newsletter Editor.  Susan Ayres did an excellent job but she has resigned.  A newsletter keeps members informed of Club activities.  If any member would like to volunteer for this position, email or talk to one of the officers.
  • After the meeting, Dan Lucovich told Denise Bilka he would volunteer to create the Club’s monthly newsletter.  Dan has a few other things under his belt right now, so give him a few months before he takes on this task.  Dan will send the newsletter out via email so members should make sure the Club has your current email address.  All members who do not have email will still get a mailed newsletter.  Until Dan is ready to take on this task, Denise will mail all pertinent Club information.  Thank you Dan for stepping up to the plate!!!

NEW BUSINESS:

  • Rick Conwell discussed the Club now has an “Activities” Committee.  Barb Adams, Susan Ayres, Denise Bilka, Rachel Hysong, and April Merriman have volunteered for this Committee.  Rick and Ceil Conwell announced that they also will volunteer for this.  This is a critical committee that will organize dates, events, and activities for the Club.
  • Susan Ayres discussed the Saturday, February 9th “Big Bang” (a 2-man musical comedy) at the Cabaret Theater.  The show starts at 5 p.m. and tickets are $25.50/person.  Dinner will follow the show at Lidia’s in the Strip District at 7 p.m.  Sign up if going to the show.  Susan needs your payment by Jan. 11th.  Any questions, call Susan at (412) 822-7298.
  • Denise Bilka discussed the February 22-24th World of Wheels Show at the Convention Center where one of Jack Weber’s cars will be on display.  Discount tickets for the show are available at Advance Auto.  Jeff Bilka is planning dinner after the show on Saturday, February 23rd at 7 p.m. at the Spaghetti Warehouse in the Strip District.  If interested in dinner, sign up.  Any questions, call Jeff at (412) 487-6835.
  • Denise Bilka discussed the Saturday, March 29th event that includes dinner at Atria’s on Rt. 8 at 6 p.m. and the “Viva Broadway – Las Vegas Revue” show at the Keane Theatre at 8 p.m.  If interested, sign up and call the Keane Theatre (724) 444-5326 to order your tickets.  Any questions, call Denise at (412) 487-6835.
  • April Merriman discussed the Saturday, April 12th tea and wine tasting at Soergel’s Market in Wexford.  The event starts at noon and the cost is $25.  If interested, sign up.  April will need your payment by the March 12th  meeting.  Any questions, call April at (412) 367-2677.
  • April Merriman discussed the “Corvette Coin” that was a big hit at the Christmas party.  The coin costs $20 + shipping and April passed around the catalog where members could order it.
  • George Hysong discussed the August 15-17th Woodward Cruise in Detroit, Michigan.  This is a huge event with over 40,000 cars and 1.2 million spectators.  The hotel used last year called George and offered the Club a lower price than last year.  The cost this year will be $65 + tax per night.  George will hold 20 rooms for the Club and each member will have to call to reserve their room.  The Club will probably park in the same vicinity as last year and reservations for parking will be available in March.  Joe Lebert asked if anyone had any connections with another Corvette Club to help get better parking but no one had any connections.  George will have more information at an upcoming meeting.  If interested, sign up.  Any questions, call George at (412) 492-0133.
  • Rick Conwell discussed that Denny Podrasky has resigned as the coordinator of the Baierl Charity Cruise.  Jeff Nock from Baierl and the North Hills High School students are interested in this event.  The Club needs a volunteer to be the coordinator.  If any member is interested, please contact one of the officers.  If no one steps up, the Club will need to discuss this matter with Jeff Nock to see how to proceed with the cruise.
  • Ron Knorr discussed that Exotic Cars has moved from Rt. 51 to Wexford.  Once the business is up and running, Ron will set up a tour to see all the high-end imports and other cars on display.
  • Ron Knorr discussed the “Ride & Drive” driving experience at Jennerstown Speedway on Rt. 30, north of Somerset.  The cost of this event runs between $400-$450 and includes a catered lunch, school, and driving a race car on a ½ mile paved oval track.  This will be open to five students in an a.m. session and five students in a p.m. session and can be held on any day except Saturday.  Ron will discuss this further at an upcoming meeting.  For information, go to www.jennerstown.com or call Ron Knorr at (724)776-1402.
  • Jim Kraus discussed the “Pittsburgh Curling on Ice” event he wants to plan for the Club next January.  This is a fun event where participants push a big stone with a broom on ice.  This event will be held on a Sunday at the Robert Morris Sports Island on Neville Island.  Jim will get more information together as next January approaches.
  • Rick Conwell discussed a possible overnight trip to Cooperstown, New York, to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame with a stop at the Herkimer Diamond Mines, where for $7 members can use a pick and shovel to find their own diamonds.  If members don’t want to use a pick and shovel, there is a nice gift shop where members can purchase these diamond crystals.  Rick will look into this and will have more information at next month’s meeting.
  • Rick Conwell discussed two other trips to see if there was any interest before he plans them for the Club.  One is a day trip to Meyersdale to the Martin Guitar Factory with dinner after.  Another trip is to Bradford for a tour of the Zippo Lighter factory and museum.  Rick will check into both of these trips and have more information at an upcoming meeting.
  • Rick Conwell discussed the possibility of the Club getting involved in an autocross which is a skill road race.  There is a lot of work involved in this kind of activity and Rick asked the members to think about it as a Club activity.
  • Dan Lucovich discussed the Saturday, March 15th plant tour of his company, Creekside Mushrooms.  After eating all the mushrooms you can pick, the Club will tour a local winery and have dinner at Jardine’s in Sarver.  If interested, please sign up.  More details will be coming soon about this event.
  • Larry Rosenberry discussed a “Mystery Breakfast” cruise he is going to plan for the Club.  This event consists of the members driving in a caravan for about an hour and ending up ??????  That’s the mystery.  Watch for more details on this fun event.
  • The next Club meeting will be Tuesday, February 12th at Domenico’s Ristorante in Cranberry.
  • Dan Lucovich won the 50/50 of $57.  Congratulations to Dan!
  • Bill Miller made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  Connie Rosenberry seconded.  The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
